Why Go Solar

The Benefits of Solar Panels

Solar energy isn't just good for the planet - it's one of the smartest financial decisions you can make for your home.

Reduce Bills by up to 64%

The average UK household saves between 450 and 950 per year on electricity bills with solar panels. With rising energy prices, your savings grow year on year.

Earn from Surplus Energy

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for every unit of electricity you export back to the grid. Typical households earn 100 to 200 annually.

Increase Property Value

Solar panels can add 4 to 14% to your property value. Buyers are increasingly willing to pay more for energy-efficient homes with lower running costs.

Cut Your Carbon Footprint

A typical 4kW system saves around 1.7 tonnes of CO2 per year - equivalent to driving 4,000 fewer miles.

Battery Storage for 24/7 Power

Adding battery storage lets you use solar energy in the evening and overnight. Increase your self-consumption from 30% to over 70%.

25-Year Warranties

Our Tier-1 panels come with 25-year performance warranties. Combined with Hometree's insurance-backed guarantee, your investment is protected for decades.

Step by Step

How Solar Energy Works in Your Home

Solar is simpler than most people think. Here is exactly what happens from the moment sunlight hits your roof to the moment you see savings on your bill.

Step 01

Sunlight Hits Your Panels

Photovoltaic cells in each panel convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. Even on cloudy days, panels generate power - the UK gets enough sunlight for solar to work effectively year-round.

Key fact

Your roof receives 900-1,100 kWh of solar energy per square metre each year

Step 02

Inverter Converts the Power

A solar inverter converts the DC electricity from your panels into alternating current (AC) - the type your home appliances use. Modern inverters are 97%+ efficient and monitor your system 24/7.

Key fact

Smart inverters optimise output and report performance to your phone

Step 03

Your Home Uses It First

Solar electricity powers your home directly - lights, appliances, heating, EV charging. This is the electricity you no longer buy from the grid, which is where your biggest savings come from.

Key fact

Every unit you use from solar saves you 24.5p at current rates

Step 04

Battery Stores the Surplus

When your panels generate more than you need, a battery stores the excess for later. Use it in the evening, overnight, or during peak rate periods to maximise your savings.

Key fact

A 5kWh battery typically covers an evening's electricity usage

Step 05

Export and Earn

Any surplus energy you don't use or store is exported to the national grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), your energy supplier pays you for every unit exported.

Key fact

Earn 12-15p per kWh exported - typically 100-200 per year

Quick Check

Is Solar Right for Your Home?

Most UK homes are suitable for solar panels. Run through this quick checklist to see if your property is a good fit - and don't worry, our free survey covers everything in detail.

South, South-East, or South-West Facing Roof

South-facing roofs get the most sunlight, but east and west-facing roofs still work well - you will generate around 80-85% of a south-facing system.

Roof Angle Between 30 and 40 Degrees

Most UK pitched roofs fall in this range naturally. Flat roofs work too - we use angled mounting frames to optimise the panel position.

Minimal Shading from Trees or Buildings

Panels perform best with clear, unobstructed access to the sky. Some shading is manageable with micro-inverters or optimisers.

Structurally Sound Roof

Your roof needs to support the panel weight (around 20kg per panel). We check this during your free survey - most roofs are suitable.

Homeowner (or Landlord with Tenant Agreement)

You need to own the property or have the landlord's written permission. Tenants cannot install solar without approval.

Not a Listed Building (or Have Consent)

Standard homes don't need planning permission. Listed buildings and conservation areas may need additional consent - we can advise.

Not a perfect match?

Solar still works well in these situations:

  • East or west-facing roof (80-85% output)
  • Flat roof (angled mounting frames used)
  • Partial shading (optimisers compensate)
  • Older roof tiles (replaced if needed during install)
  • Small roof space (3kW systems need just 12 sqm)
