Solar Panel Maintenance: What You Actually Need to Do

JMS Eco6 March 20263 min read

The Short Answer

Solar panels are one of the lowest-maintenance home improvements you can make. There are no moving parts, nothing to replace, and modern panels are built to last 25-30 years with minimal attention.

That said, a small amount of care can make a noticeable difference to your output - and your savings.

Cleaning Your Panels

Rain does a decent job of keeping panels clean in the UK, but it won't remove everything. Bird droppings, tree sap, and general grime can reduce output by 5-10% if left unchecked.

Here's what we recommend:

  • Check panels twice a year - spring and autumn are ideal
  • Use a soft brush or sponge with clean water
  • Never use abrasive cleaners or pressure washers
  • Clean early morning or late evening when panels are cool - cold water on hot panels can cause micro-cracks

If your panels are on a high or steep roof, don't risk climbing up yourself. A professional clean costs around £50-100 and is far cheaper than an A&E visit.

Monitoring Performance

Most modern inverters come with an app that shows your daily and monthly generation. Get into the habit of checking it occasionally. A sudden drop in output usually means one of three things:

  1. Panels need cleaning - the most common cause
  2. Shading has changed - a tree may have grown or a new structure built nearby
  3. Inverter fault - rare, but inverters typically last 10-15 years and may need replacing once during the panel lifespan

If you notice a consistent drop that cleaning doesn't fix, it's worth getting a professional inspection.

Inverter and Wiring Checks

Your installer should have set up your system with all the necessary safety features, but it's worth having a professional inspection every 5 years or so. This covers:

  • Inverter performance and error logs
  • Wiring and connection integrity
  • Mounting bracket condition
  • Panel surface inspection for damage

What You Don't Need to Worry About

  • Snow: Light snow slides off angled panels quickly. Heavy snow can be gently brushed off but will melt on its own
  • Hail: Modern panels are tested to withstand 25mm hailstones at 80km/h
  • Wind: Properly installed panels are rated for winds up to 140mph
